Lygia
Lygia (also known as Ligia) is a charming fishing village situated on the East coast of Lefkas (Lefkada), only about five kilometres south of Lefkas Town. It is a small fishing village with views of the fortress dedicated to St. George across the straits on the mainland Life here is slow and stress-free. The centre point of the village is it's little harbour where much of the Island's fresh fish arrives every day.
Lygia (Ligia) village consists of one main street with a few tavernas, cafes and bars. A couple of minimarkets, a bakery and two petrol stations add to the selection of places in which to spend your money. This is a very relaxing place to stay. The eating is good - you can sit for hours at one of the harbour front tavernas eating a plate of Gavros (small fried fish) with a Greek salad and a basket of fresh crusty Greek bread, enjoying the breeze off the sea and the views across to the Castle of Saint George on the mainland.
The area is ideal for those who enjoy hill walking as Ligia is framed by pine covered hills and olive groves. Ligia is essentially a family resort which is also popular with older couples. Early and late season attracts walkers when the weather is cooler. It is worth visiting the Valley of Love, a beautiful green location. Also there is a pebble beache (there exactly we are), are usually quiet except for the peak season, where you can enjoy your drink or snack or cold food from our accommodation.
Lygia is a good place to stay to explore the West Coast of Lefkas (Lefkada) with it's spectacular scenery and beaches. The mainland is straight across the sea, or a 15 minute drive via Lefkas Town.. To do this it is best to book a car in advance as there are not many rental companies in the village. For a bit more to do, you can take a bicycle, bus or taxi up to Lefkas Town for the shops and nightlife.
Lefkada Island
The island of Lefkada belongs to the "Eptanisia", an island complex that lie in the Ionian Sea. Lefkada is the fourth largest island of the Ionian Sea with 23,000 inhabitants and an area of 302,5 square kilometers. The climate of the island is Mediterranean with extensive hours of sunlight daily and hot summer with cool breezes.
Lefkada or Lefkas island took it's name from the cape Lefkata, which lies in the most southern part of the island. Huge white rocks form an intense landscape. Here, according to tradition, the lyric poetess Sapfo jumped from the cliffs to end her life and her misfortune love for the handsome Faona.
Lefkada is famous for the marvelous long sandy beaches with crystal clear waters. Here you will enjoy swimming in some of the most fascinating and inviting landscapes Greece has to offer.
The beaches of Porto Katsiki and Egremnoi will take your breath away with their imposing beauty and their turquoise-blue waters. They are located at the southern part of the island close to the cape Lefkatas.
One also should visit the long sandy organized beach at Kathisma, which lies next to Ag. Nikitas one of the most well known resort villages of the island. In the same area we find the beautiful beach at Pefkoulia.
Lefkada is the only island in Greece, which is linked with the mainland by a floating bridge. That way Lefkada island is accessible by car through Akarnania.
Lefkada town is 385km from Athens the capital of Greece. There are daily bus routes from Athens to Lefkada. Lefkada is also linked by bus with Thessaloniki (420km) the second most important city in Greece.
You can reach the island from the airport of Aktio, which lies in the mainland in a distance of 25km from the town of Lefkada. Lefkada is also linked by boat with other islands of the Ionian sea like Ithaca and Cephalonia, with frequent routes.
